A little history of Pointe du Roc and Granville...

Pointe du Roc, a granite peninsula, was originally inhabited by a handful of fishermen. It was formerly known as Cap Lihou.

The town came into being in 1439, after the first fortifications were built by the English.

The English seneschal Sir Thomas de Scales took the initiative of building a major stronghold here as part of his conquest of Norman lands.

The rock was ideally placed, out of sight of Mont Saint-Michel. The goal of conquest so envied by the English!

The English subsequently obtained the land by buying it from local lord Jean d'Argouges. They then decided to dig a wide trench to turn it into the best possible natural defence.

It was during the Second World War that the Germans built a battery on the site, turning it into a veritable fortress.

Initially, the Pointe du Roc battery consisted of 25 blockhouses. Today, around a dozen remain, including the central bunker, which you can find at the heart of the site.

Take a walk in a natural setting

The Pointe du Roc is one of Granville's finest viewpoints. It offers a breathtaking view of the Channel Islands and the Chausey archipelago, which can be seen offshore.

It's the perfect place for a stroll.

To discover the superb Pointe du Roc walk, set off from the Haute Ville on foot. You'll need to do the tour from above, or from the foot of the walls.

The exit is at the old barracks.

All you have to do then is walk to the Pointe Sauvage, then back down to the port.
